The Laikipia Antivenom Fund provides financial assistance for low-income patients who arrive at a hospital requiring antivenom treatment. The price of these medicines for many people in Laikipia - particularly those at highest risk of snake bites - is astronomical. The goal of the Laikipia Antivenom Fund is to alleviate this financial burden, while also eliminating the delay between patient arrival and definitive care. Because general hospital treatment is covered by national insurance, the Laikipia Antivenom Fund exclusively pays for antivenom treatment for low-income patients.
Physicians who draw from the fund will also be asked to fill out a data sheet with non-identifying information regarding the patient to aid in future research with regard to Kenyan snake bite epidemiology. This research could prove valuable to hospitals and future programs targeting this neglected tropical disease.
